Kardo, short for Cardio Karate, combines karate and kickboxing techniques at high intensity with music. Just like in karate, exams are conducted where participants demonstrate their technique, perseverance, and willpower. Instead of colored belts, as in traditional karate, Kardo uses colored bandages to signify different levels:
Level 1 - Yellow: Dedicated Student (30 minutes of nonstop technique and general strength exercises)
Level 2 - Orange: Advanced Student (60 minutes of nonstop technique and general strength exercises)
Level 3 - Green: Professional (1.5 hours of nonstop technique and explosive strength exercises)
Level 4 - Purple: Athlete (2 hours of nonstop technique and explosive strength exercises)
The purple challenge is seen as the ultimate test, a trial of physical and mental strength that many undertake only once in their lifetime. However, Barbara, now 57 years old, challenged herself to complete this grueling test for the second time! On February 23, 2025, she once again proved her unbreakable spirit and determination by being the oldest participant to complete the challenge and receive her purple certificate. This time, her achievement was recognized with a newly designed A3-sized certificate, symbolizing her incredible feat.
Barbara was not alone. Alongside her, five other Dutch participants took the exam. The results:
1x Yellow
2x Orange
2x Purple
Among them was Martha Schmeltz, who also completed the instructor training with her Level 3 certification. She now conducts training sessions herself and inspires new participants to push themselves to their limits. Because that is the true power of Kardo: from student to professional to teacher.
Barbara’s story is proof that age is no barrier to determination and perseverance. Her achievement inspires others to never give up and always strive for their best. Who will follow in her footsteps?
